Sharky Slot Review

Ready to win lots of treasure? It’s time to jump on the Pirate ship as we join fearless Pirate Sharky and his crew on a voyage across the deadly seas hoping to ride the tide and avoid the vicious sharks along the way.

It’s just one in a long line of Pirate-themed slots but have Novomatic landed the treasure with Sharky or will you feel like walking the plank instead?

The structure of Sharky very simple with 5 reels and 9 paylines but works how all slots function. There are bet per line options that range from 1 to 100 meaning all paylines can be played from as little as £0.09 per spin up to a maximum of £90 every single spin.

Sea Symbols but Silly Sounds

Sharky is the main man in the slot and therefore the main symbol to watch for on the reels. Sharky acts as a Wild and substitutes for the rest of the symbols apart from three Scatters, which are a Compass, Pirate Ship and Desert Island. Completing the line-up of symbols is a Parrot, Treasure Chest, Swords, along with Ace to 9 playing card symbols.

Of course, Sharky is the most valuable symbol on the reels with five on a payline rewarding you with a win 5000 coins whereas five of the 10 or 9 playing card symbols on a payline only rewards you with 100 coins.

Unfortunately the sounds are terrible and have a negative impact on the playing experience of Sharky. Sounds are a key factor of a slot machine helping to add to the drama of the theme therefore you’d expect sounds of waves, anchors, swords clashing or even a Pirate saying ‘Ahoy there matey’ but nope – none of this. Instead it the standard sounds found in many other Novomatic slots such as Columbus and Dolphins Pearl Deluxe which is a great shame!

Spins from the Sea

This is the one and only bonus feature in Sharky, but it’s definitely where the real treasure is won. It did take me a little while to trigger to be honest as it requires a tricky combination rather than symbols displaying anywhere on screen – you must land the Pirate Ship on reel one with the Desert Island on reel five in the same spin. Don’t worry it’s definitely worth the wait and it can also be retriggered as you play for additional spins.

You initially receive 10 free spins but there are some symbols to watch out for as the reels spin. Any time the Pirate Ship symbol lands on the first reel sees the Pirate lowered into a smaller boat and rowing across the screen to the fifth reel, randomly turning other symbols Wild along the way. On top of this if he lands next to a Treasure Chest symbol an instant win is awarded in the value of 18 to 450 credits – however should he encounter a Shark it attacks him and he no longer has the ability to substitute for other Scatters.

Double Up

Every Pirate loves a gamble and now you have the chance to after every winning combination. You simply press the red or black button beside the spin button and you will then see a playing card flickering between the two colours. Your job is to select the button of your choice and hope that the card stops flashing on it. A right decision doubles your loot, but the wrong decision sees it fall overboard, swept into the ocean never to be recovered!

Don’t Drop The Anchor!

Don’t drop the anchor because we aren’t stopping here! I can only see two reasons why you’d want to play Sharky – either you are playing slots on a budget or you prefer the classic styled slot machines from yesteryear. The fact that you can play all paylines on Sharky for just £0.09 is awesome, and it is a fantastic classic slot to play if you fancy a change from spinning fruit related symbols which so many of them usually have.

In fairness the free spins mode is good value with ten free spins awarded and additional symbols resulting in more winning opportunities – I loved how the Pirate sails across the reels adding a little drama as he tries to avoid the deadly sharks attacking him.

In conclusion, there are many better Pirate-themed online slots out there to spend your money on such as Captain Jackpot’s Cash Ahoy from Barcrest, or for 3D slots fans Barbary Coast from Betsoft Gaming – both of these are fantastic alternatives which boast much slicker graphics, several bonus features, and even bigger wins!
