Katana Slots

The rich history of Japan offers many appealing avenues for slots developers to come up with fresh new ideas for their slot machines, and this offering from Novomatic is no exception, bringing a classic Oriental feel to the online reels as it focuses on the Katana – and the land based casino player amongst you may find it very similar to Shogun.

A symbolic symbol from Japanese history, the Katana was a traditionally made Japanese sword which dates back centuries as it was used by the Samurai of feudal Japan. The appearance of the Katana is distinctive with its long and slightly curved single edged blade and very long handle to enable both hands to grip it as it is wielded through the air.

Boasting amazing graphics, Katana has a 5 reel and 20 payline structure which will be familiar to most of you. It offers coin denominations (check our slots glossary if you’re unsure what this is) of 0.01 up to a maximum of 5 meaning a minimum spin of all paylines can be had for £0.20 up to a maximum of £100 each and every time.

Oriental Symbols without the Sounds

The symbols in Katana are quite simply stunning – so detailed and realistic you’ll feel like you’re in Japan yourself. The Wild symbol in Katana is the bald figure of Shogun who substitutes for any other symbols on the reels apart from the Scatter – which happens to be a pair of Katana swords and these are required to trigger a free spins mode. Keeping up the Oriental theme is a Geisha, the infamous Nagoya Castle, a Mounted Flag Bearer, Archers, Temple, and Japanese styled Ace to 10 playing card symbols.

Aside from the free spins mode beginning, successfully landing five or more Scatter symbols on a payline sees you rewarded with a 200x win, whereas five of the Jack or 10 playing cards on a payline only result in a mere 5x win – a substantial difference which highlights the importance of landing the main symbols if you seek Samurai sized wins!

It’s so frustrating that a slot steeped in history with an Oriental theme has been ruined by sounds that are upbeat and completely unrelated to the theme. Novomatic have simply added the same standard sounds they use in so many of their slots (such as American Diner and Sizzling Hot Deluxe) rather than creating unique and authentic sounds, such as the Katana slicing into something, to tie in with the theme – a great shame!

Shogun Spins

It’s time to set the sword to the side, lay back and relax as you simply can’t fail to land a big win during the free spins mode in Katana. To activate the feature you must land three or more of the Scatter symbols (set of Katana’s) which will see you rewarded with 10 free spins – and as if that wasn’t enough they are joined by Shogun. It sees Shogun become an expanding Wild if there is the possibility of contributing to a winning combination, plus additional free spins can be triggered top increase your count simply by landing three Scatters during your free spins.

Double the Wins

A common feature in Novomatic slot machines is the gamble feature and it is present here too. It sees you get to choose whether to gamble or not after every standard winning combination in an attempt to further boost your wins.

You’ll be presented with a card face down that flickers between red and black and you must select the colour you think it will stop on when you hit the button. The correct choice sees your wins double and you can go again and again until you decide to collect, or make the wrong selection and lose all of the winnings accumulated!

Does Katana Hit The Spot?

Is it the best slot machine available online? Certainly not! In fact it’s not even the best Oriental themed slot – I prefer Thunderfist which is one of the most fun Net Entertainment slots around and also boasts Samurai warriors. The sound which accompanies gameplay is completely generic and detracts from the theme, however there are several positive aspects which make it worth a try.

The symbols have been beautifully designed – very detailed and realistic looking, the stakes available will suit anyone’s bankroll, and ten free spins with the Shogun expanding Wild never fails to yield big wins – give it a go!
