Gems Wild-Tiles Slot

Candy Crush and its many imitators continue to be a mainstay of the social media and mobile gaming boom. And it's easy to see why: they games are attractive, the gameplay is simple, and the addictive "wins" keep you coming back for more.

Of course, it didn't take long for the slots manufacturers to sit up and take notice, with Blueprint's Bejeweled and Bejeweled 2, and NetEnt's Sugar Pop adding massive real-money prizes to tried-and-trusted gameplay.

Now, IGT have come along with the latest in their series of 'falling reels' slots: Gem Wild Tiles. Taking a similar take on those classic video games, this is less a classic 'slot machine' and more a

Land The Gems For Big Diamond Wins

Featured in the slot are various gems and diamonds which line up on the grid for winning payouts. Any combination of 3+ symbols connected vertically or horizontally will explode and disappear from the reels. The symbols positioned above will then drop into their place. This can keep continuing until a non-winning line is formed.

As you make consecutive winning combos, a meter on the side of the screen fills up. Each subsequent winning spin has an increasing multiplier attached, so it's possible to fill the meter and earn a bonus worth 200x your total stake - not a bad little haul.

The gems start off with the lowest-paying blue sapphires at 1/10 your stake for three in a row, then rubies, emeralds and diamonds. The double emerald symbols pay 7.5x your stake for five in a line.

As with most classic NOVOMATIC games you can also double your win via the GAMBLE option after any winner. This takes the form of a familiar 'Red or Black?' card game.

Wilds Are King In This Slot

The top payer is the Wild and it substitutes for all symbols in Gems Wild Tiles. Five in a row will pay out 50x your total stake. Wilds will appear after a spin and 'take over' an existing symbol on-screen. If the win is for three symbols in a row, the Wild will take over the middle symbol and can be used on the next fall.

However, the beauty of the Wilds - which often appeared stacked - is that they help you clear winning lines much quicker, and that means filling the meter quicker too.

Reveal the 'BONUS' Columns For Big Wins

You'll notice in the background behind the symbols that some columns have the letters 'B, O, N, U, S' written vertically down them. If you manage to clear an entire column after successive winners and reveal the word, a bonus feature will trigger.

In the bonus round, all reel placings feature a question mark symbol. All you need to do is click on the '?' icons to reveal gems or diamonds. Every square containing your identical pick will be revealed. If you match enough identical symbols (the amount you need is displayed on the right of the reels) the bonus round re-triggers.

It's easier said than done, of course. We got agonisingly close to clearing a whole column but often the pesky remaining Wild would fail to complete a combo and we'd have to start the game again. You're also at the mercy of where the random BONUS columns are located.

Watch For Wilds And Hit A Bunch Of Spins

Gems Wild Tiles is one of those addictive little slots that can promise lots of wins for a reasonably small outlay. The BONUS feature is frustrating to trigger - especially with a Wild symbol that doesn't know when it's time to leave the screen - but if you want a fairly low-medium variance game with the promise of some progressive multipliers, this is the game for you.

If you love those 'exploding' symbols games, do check out NetEnt's psychedelic Sugar Pop which features a 5x5 grid that works in a similar way. The grid will even rotate 180 degrees to give you even more chances to win big and bonus wins can be made by forming certain patterns with your matching symbols. It's a slick, beautiful-looking game.
