Emperor’s China Slot Machine

Novomatic love to send players on a journey with the online slots games they release. And that's certainly the case with the developer’s latest creation.

Coming from the deep heartland of China, the aptly titled Emperor’s China puts players on an Oriental adventure of a lifetime, or at least that is what Novomatic claims. What is immediately clear about this game – outside of the theme – is the fact that this game has all the credentials of a “classic” style slots release.

The simplistic nature of the game is sure to grab the eye, but with the 5 reels, 3 rows, and 9 paylines, questions have been raised over just how much excitement this game can deliver. With the hype surrounding Emperor’s China being pretty evident, we have developed deep into the game to see if Novomatic has delivered where it matters.

Riding Across The Orient

In looks, Emperor’s China is a game that is clearly driven forward by its theme, as the game carries lashings of gold and fireworks in true Oriental fashion. While the production values in the game are pretty solid, and the theme is at least ambitious, this game simply lacks that “special” something. The look of the game at times just feels flat and overly cliché, with this being almost impossible to get away from. Putting it simply, Novomatic could have thought outside the box a little more here with Emperor’s China, as it doesn’t do enough to separate itself in looks from all the other Ancient China-themed games around.

Easy On The Mind

Once again – as seemingly with every Novomatic title these days – Emperor’s China is a really easy game to play. Basically, if you’ve ever played a classic styled slot before you can quickly get up to speed with how this game works. Split across 5 reels, 3 rows, and 9 paylines, you can freely tweak the wager at the bottom of the screen, with it just being a case of hitting spin from the then on in. Sadly, the basic nature of this game seems to come with a sacrifice, as the payouts are hardly anything to write home about. Much like with the design of Emperor’s China, the gameplay often feels like it’s one step forward, two steps back at times.

All Hail The Emperor

If you really want to get the absolute best out of Emperor’s China, you need to keep a special eye out for the game’s scatters symbols. Quite fittingly represented by Emperor of China himself, when you are able to grab 3 of him on the reels an impressive 15 free spins will head your way.

These free spins are certainly an enjoyable bonus feature in this game, but it by no means the end of the fun here. You can actually retrigger more free spins should you be able to continuously find the Emperor scatter symbol when in a free spins round. While the gameplay here drags its heels at times, the free spins element of Emperor’s China does help paper over the cracks.

Celebrate Chinese New Year In Style

Emperor’s China is certainly fun in parts, but this game is anything but unique, with there being a whole host of similarly themed games out there that can both match it and – in some instances – better it.

Sorting through all the dross that fills the Ancient China styled slots sub-genre, we’ve found two games that are worth taking a look at. Chinese New Year by Gamesys is a rare breed in the sense that it is a prize and payout powerhouse, while Dragon’s Pearl by Novomatic carries such an amazing level of adventure that it simply shouldn’t be ignored.

Novomatic has plenty of amazing games within its ranks, but sadly we don’t feel that Emperor’s China will go down as one. This game has an okay look, okay gameplay, and okay payouts, so as you can gather this game is simply okay when weighed up against what else is currently out there.

Lacking the “it” factor required to be a real critical smash-hit, Emperor’s China is a fun little game, but it certainly can’t be depended on if it’s replay value that you’re after.
