Golden Balls Slots

‘Split or Steal?’ was the question asked on our television screens almost every weekday on ITV as Golden Balls aired from 2007 to 2009. The game of generosity or deceit was hosted by Jaspar Carrott and this slot machine released by Endemol in November 2011 encapsulates the game show perfectly with authentic sounds from the show rhosted byinging out as you play, and bonus features based on what exactly happened.

For those of you unfamiliar with Golden Balls it saw a machine containing 100 balls spin around, each containing a value from £10 to £75,000. Twelve balls were randomly picked and four Killer balls added by assistant Amanda Grant, with the sixteen balls shared equally amongst the four contestants. It saw two rounds with the value of half the contestant’s balls being displayed and then they all vote to eliminate someone (with the aim being to get rid of the Killers). The final sees two players go head to head in Bin or Win before deciding to Split or Steal the prize pot.

Golden Balls has the typical Endemol structure of 5 reels and 20 paylines with varying betting options. The stake per line can be adjusted from £0.01 up to £1 meaning all paylines can be played from £0.20 up to £20.

Familiar Symbols for Big Wins

The symbols used in Golden Balls will be familiar with fans of the show, with the Golden Balls logo being the games Wild and substituting for all others except for the Scatter. The Scatter symbol activates bonus features with the number of Scatters falling determining which of the bonus features begin – Bin or Win, Split or Steal, or else Killer Spinner. The other symbols include the Steal ball, Split ball, Killer ball, stealing contestant, splitting contestant, ball machine, contestant name, watermelon, cherries, plum and lemon.

Bin or Win

Deciding whether to ‘bin or win’ the golden balls can be a tricky decision but it is one you will be faced with whenever you land three Scatter symbols on screen. This sees you presented with a total of 11 golden balls which will either be killers or contain a cash prize. Your task is to pick 5 of these to open and keep with the cash values tallied up, and while a killer sees your total win divided by ten on the show, in this slot machine the killer simply has a value of zero thus not decreasing what you have already won.

Killer Spinner

A free spins feature is the holy grail of any online slot machine, and the Killer Spinner feature in Golden Balls is no exception as it can continue for countless spins. Firstly you need to land four or more Scatter symbols and rather than receive a set number of spins the reels will spin one after the other – only ending whenever the Killer Ball symbol lands on reel 3 AND all wins are doubled. This is definitely one of the best free spins features I have come across!

Split or Steal?

The split or steal bonus feature triggers when you land five or more Scatter symbols and is actually made up of two parts. Firstly you are presented with a new set of reels that only feature X’s and Jackpot symbols with your goal being to land five Jackpot symbols on one payline within five spins – which is pretty easy thanks to Jackpot symbols holding in place for the next spin. When you achieve this it’s time to decide whether to split or steel.

If you managed to acquire one to four Jackpot symbols you get the chance to double your winnings by choosing one of two golden balls – with the split ball ending the feature and awarding the current win, while the steal balls doubles your winnings.

If you were lucky enough to have acquired five Jackpot symbols you can’t lose as a slots jackpot is guaranteed - the two balls will now be the Split Jackpot or the Steal Jackpot, with the Steal Jackpot being much more lucrative.

Is this a Golden slot?

This is another TV themed slot which are the types of slots that Endemol are so fantastic at developing, and yet again they have done the show justice. With authentic sounds and symbols from the show, Golden Balls plays just as it did on television, but I was a little disappointed that neither Jasper nor Amanda featured on the reels – especially Amanda (for some reason).

The three bonus features included are very lucrative with my favourite being the Killer Spinner free spins mode that rewards you with an unlimited number of free spins, only ending when you land a Killer symbol on the middle reel and all wins are doubled for extra rewards!
