King of the Aztecs Slot Review

It’s time to don your cape and get your groove on as we join the burly King and his Aztec tribe in the hope of winning big money spinning the reels. King of the Aztecs is, as obvious, an Aztec themed slot machine from Barcrest which breaks the mould from their other releases. This slot sees the welcome addition of a fully animated 3D Aztec King who is positioned to the left of the reels watching over your spins – a very positive move for Barcrest as so many developers are now offering 3D slots.

It boasts vibrant colours and upbeat music which really makes you feel part of the Aztec tribe with drums, rattles, and flutes bringing the reels to life and making you want to dance around your room in celebration of those big wins!

Unfortunately there are no free spins or pick ‘em games - instead only a wild reels feature but it can occur at random and almost always produces very large wins. On the other hand it is a slot which is accessible for players of all budgets with stake per line settings from £0.01 up to £20 (£0.20 minimum bet and £400 maximum if you choose all paylines) plus there is a maximum win of £250,000 – a sum which will see you live like a King yourself!

Awesome Aztec Symbols

I absolutely love the symbols which have been used in King of the Aztecs, with all of them being very bold and colourful which enhances the gameplay as you spin the reels - whether in free mode or in real money mode. Barcrest have done an awesome job of designing them in true Aztec style, reminiscent of what you would have seen painted on walls and etched into Totem Poles during the period.

The King of the Aztecs slot logo is the stacked Wild and substitutes for every other symbol you will encounter – and, unlike many slot machines, this includes the Scatter which is represented by the Aztec Chief. My favourite symbols (not when it comes to wins, but for design) are the three Aztec symbols which were very significant during the Aztec Empire (painted on walls and etched into totem poles, as they represented religion, war, art etc) and seem to represent a skull, bird, and a lizard. Completing the line-up of symbols are Ace, King, Queen and Jack playing card symbols which again have a real Aztec feel about them.

Of course, the Wild is by far the highest paying symbol with five on a payline resulting in a 500x line win, whereas the Jack playing card symbol only pays out 80x for five – but the biggest wins of all come from the Wild Reels feature.

Wild Reels

Wild Reels is the one and only bonus feature in King of the Aztecs, but boy does it provide huge wins on the reels ! You’ll be pleasantly surprised to hear there are no complicated combination of symbols required for this feature, instead it occurs randomly with reels 2, 3 and 4 having the ability to fall entirely Wild.

It’s important to note that the Wild will only replace one Scatter on each reel but the wins I’ve achieved during Wild Reels while reviewing King of the Aztecs were jaw-dropping and I was shocked at how commonly Wild Reels fall – with a cheerful singing sound from the rest of the tribe as they do.

When you do get a large win the Aztec King displays with the words ‘Big Win’ exploding on screen and gold coins falling around him as your total win is announced and then added to your balance – something that reminded me of the animation that occurs when you get big wins on the Wipeout slot machine.

Thoughts on King of the Aztecs

Overall I really loved playing King of the Aztecs and I’m sure you will too. The bold Aztec symbols and instrumentals compliment the theme perfectly, and I love how there is a 3D animated character on the reels at all times – the Aztec King. Despite only containing the one bonus feature – Wild Reels, it is extremely rewarding and results in very large wins, plus even the standard payouts on offer are higher than standard Barcrest slot machines.

As far as Barcrest goes it’s certainly a great step, but I see what they have tried to do here. They’ve seen the explosion of popularity in 3D slot machines so thought they would make an attempt, but the industry leading 3D slots developer is Betsoft Gaming and they offer two alternatives in the Aztec niche already - Aztec’s Treasure and Rook’s Revenge, both of which boast even more advanced graphics and bonus features.
