Dead or Alive Slot Machine

It’s time to shoot up the reels as we find ourselves in the Wild West with a saloon to the left and the Sheriff’s office on the right as we pursuit outlaws to bring them to justice – one way or another!

It seems NetEnt have based this Western-themed slot machine on the television series ‘Wanted: Dead or Alive’ which ran from 1959 to 1961 in which Steve McQueen played the role of bounty hunter Josh Randall who prowled the Wild West in search of outlaws with bounties on their heads. With a fantastic Western design, a generous free spins mode where all wins are doubled, and stick Wilds that practically guarantee big payouts your bounty awaits!

At What Cost?

The structure of Dead or Alive is a little different from the majority of real money slot machines from NetEnt as it contains 5 reels with 3 rows but only 9 paylines, whereas their slots usually consist of 20 paylines instead. This lends itself to low stakes slots players though as coin values range from just 1p up to 50p and with one to four coins allowed to be bet on each payline this means you can play all paylines on Dead or Alive for as little 9p or as much as £18 each and every spin.

Gun Slinger Symbols

As usual, NetEnt have done a superb job designing symbols to fit in with the theme of the slot, with the Wild West prominent across the twelve symbols that are included.

The Wild is a ‘Wanted: Dead or Alive’ poster which has a silhouette of an outlaw holding a revolver and this has the ability to substitute for all other symbols except for the Scatter symbol, plus it pays out 1500 coins should you manage to land five on a payline. The Scatter is two revolvers with bullets between them and this is actually the most valuable symbol of all in Dead or Alive. Not only does it trigger the free spins feature which will be discussed below, landing five of these on a payline rewards you with a gun-slinging 2500 coin win.

The rest of the symbols are standard but of very nice value. There is a shiny golden Sheriff badge, a gun holster with gun and bullets included, a white cowboy hat, cowboy boots, two shot glasses – one of which is full and the other is empty, with Ace to 10 playing card symbols you usually find in online casino table games that have been designed with a Western twist completing the line-up.

Up to 29 Free Spins

Land three or more Scatter symbols and you’ll trigger the free spins mode where it’s time to cash in that outlaw for a big reward. Initially you receive 12 free spins which is generous enough as it is, but the fact that your winnings on these spins are doubled just makes it even more exciting once you trigger it. In addition to this you can retrigger free spins once for an additional 12 spins, but the sticky Wilds can see you earn another five meaning the possibility of 29 free spins each time!

Sticky Wilds

The inclusion of sticky Wilds makes Dead or Alive even more exciting as it can result in truly huge bounties when playing the free spins feature. These sticky Wild symbols see the outlaw poster turn into actual outlaws rather than using a silhouette but rather than disappearing after one spin they keep their position until your free spins have ran out.

In total there are five different outlaws that can be revealed and they are: Billy the Kid, Belle, Apache, Della and Jesse James – some of the most famous outlaws in Wild West history. If you are lucky enough to land one or more of these sticky Wild symbols on each of the five reels you’ll find yourself rewarded with an additional five free spins and even if your trigger more spins they remain in place for these too!

Yeah or Nay?

Personally found The True Sheriff from Betsoft Gaming to be much more exciting as it includes a stunning second screen bonus game and boasts 3D graphics, but Dead or Alive is certainly the next best Western themed slot that I’ve encountered.

The main reason to play it is the free spins mode where you start with 12 free spins but if everything goes well you could end up enjoying 29 with a 2x multiplier attached, and mixing this with the sticky Wilds sees you reel in the bounties all day long!
