Split Symbols

Split Symbols is a feature commonly attributed to IGT slots, but the feature also appears in other developers in one form or another.

Split Symbols give players the chance to increase their wins as they effectively cram in two symbols on one spot on the reels. In a normal five-reel slot, therefore, where a payline contains five symbols maximum, a Split Symbols payline can contain 10 symbols.

What Are Split Symbols?

Split Symbols are icons that double up as two different symbols but occupy one reel space. Effectively, you're landing two symbols at the same time which means you can seriously increase your wins.

Split Symbols can appear as regular icons, Wilds or Scatters. If they appear as Scatters, as they do in some slots, you can trigger a bonus round more easily. For example, if four Scatters are needed to activate a bonus feature, that can be done by simply landing two Split Scatters next to each other (with two Scatters on each spot).

Benefits/Downsides To Split Symbols

Split Symbols have their benefits: they can double your winnings for just hitting two or three spots on a payline. That's great if you're playing at low stakes and want to up your wins during the base game. In addition, if you're lucky enough to hit 10 split symbols (5 double icons on each spot) you'll bag a healthy jackpot.

However, Split Symbols often can't be replaced by Wilds, so often when lots appear they negate the effect of a substituting Wild. In most IGT Split Symbols slots, however, Wilds double all wins they help form.

In addition, because of the added bonuses of hitting Split Symbols, slots with the feature tend to be medium-to-high volatility.

Examples of Split Symbols

While IGT may have trademarked their own Split Symbols feature, other major developers have individual interpretations of the symbol. Let's take a look at some popular Split Symbols sltos you can enjoy for free online.

  • Split Symbols
  • Noah's Ark (IGT)

IGT's Noah's Ark slot, created for the software giant by High 5 Games, features symbols in the base game that contain two symbols. Over the five reels, then, you may hit a winning payline containing up to 10 symbols (two per reel spot). In addition, all the Wilds substitute for the highest-paying symbol on a winning payline.

The bonus round is where things get interesting: it's a Free Spins feature where 'extra-rich' Split Symbols bump up players' wins. Spins can be retriggered by just landing five special symbols. As in the base game, those can consist of two Split Symbols and a single symbol.

  • Split Bonus Symbols
  • Blade (Playtech)

Playtech's popular Blade slot, based on the Wesley Snipes comic-book film, had split symbols on the fifth reel only. It comes into play when players line up four matching symbols on Reels 1-4. If the 'Blade Split' appears the last symbol in any winning payline splits into two and counts as two identical icons. Therefore, it's possible to hit combos featuring 6 symbols.

  • So Many Monsters (Microgaming)

Microgaming recently released several online slots with similar Split features. So Many Monsters (along with So Much Candy and So Much Sushi) features a special bonus round triggered if you hit three identical symbols in a row.

The 'Many More Monsters' bonus kicks in and winning symbols split in front of your eyes to increase paylines. They can even split into five monsters. For example, if you hit five identical symbols on a payline, they can all split to give you a 25-icon winner.

  • Split Wilds
  • The Dark Knight Rises (Microgaming)

Microgaming's hit progressive jackpot slot features 243 paylines and lots of interesting features like 'Symbol Scramble' where all symbols on the reels swap places to give big wins.

However, for Split Symbols fanatics, it's the 'Split Wilds' feature that appeals. Wilds can split into two at random to double winning combinations they help form. With Split Wilds it's possible to get a 6-of-a-kind win that pays double the payout of 5-of-a-kind.
