Golden Goals Slot Review

Set on the backdrop of a pitch with various footballs and golden trophies adorning the reels, Golden Goals combines football and traditional slots - but is it a winner or will it leave you feeling like you’ve just conceded in the 90th minute?

Golden Goals was released by Big Time Gaming in the run up to the 2014 World Cup, but it feels like it was made for the 1990 World Cup instead as we are now so used to advanced video slots with slick 3D graphics. Saying that, there is a free spins mode and a Go for Goal feature that boasts a maximum win of 10,000x your bet!

Fruity, not Footy, Symbols

Aside from two of them, the selection of symbols included in the Golden Goals slot machine is much the same as various other Big Time Gaming fruit machine slots, with the Haunted House slot machine being a prime example.

The standout symbol is the Wild which is represented by a football in flames. Not only does this see it substitute for all others except for the Scatter during the Go for Goal feature, but you’ll also experience wins that are worth more than three points – with three Wilds on a payline paying 100 coins, four on a payline paying 1000 coins, and five on a payline paying out the maximum prize of 10,000 coins!

The Golden Goals logo is the Scatter symbol but that’s it in terms of football-related items on the screen. Instead it is the traditional symbols we are accustomed to from playing fruit machines in pubs up and down the country as bars, watermelons, grapes, lemons, plums, oranges, cherries, and bells all appear instead.

This is rather frustrating as both a slots and football fan as there were so many other options could have been implemented as symbols such as a referee, his whistle, goalkeeper gloves, goalposts, corner flag, need I go on? Just look at the Football Star slot machine from Microgaming and you’ll see how much impact football related symbols have on the overall experience.

Free Spins

Three or more Scatter symbols (the Golden Goals logo) anywhere on the reels will see you trigger the free spins mode, but the number you receive is in your hands. A light will flash between various options with you being tasked with hitting the stop button with the maximum amount being 15 which should help boost your balance – granted not to the wages of Premier League footballers but it’s still a nice opportunity.

Go for Goal

Goals usually win games but instead in the Go for Goal trail feature it’s a colossal 10,000x win that you’ll be celebrating instead – just don’t do the ‘robot’ like Peter Crouch though!

The Go for Goal trail occurs to the right of the reels rather than on a different screen as you’d experience in more modern video slots, with you edging closer to the top as you land symbols with small numbers included on the reels, and should you be fortunate enough to reach the stated multiplier it will be multiplied with your line bet for an instant win.

Should your luck really be in, you’ll find yourself at the top of the table and then transferred to the trail on the left of the reels. Here you simply try to advance through the multiplier levels or choose to collect before you lose, with the equivalent of the World Cup being a staggering 10,000x win.

Premier League or Non-League?

Unfortunately when compared to Microgaming with their Football Star slot machine and Soccer Safari slot machine, Golden Goals simply doesn’t stack up and must be considered to be non-league in comparison.

Sure there is a free spins feature along with the Go for Goal trail which boasts a mammoth 10,000x win but these are just rehashed from other Big Time Gaming slot machines and offer nothing unique.

Speaking of unique, my biggest gripe about the Golden Goals slot machine has to be the lack of creativity in regards to symbols. Yes it is a classic styled slot but to make it stand out from the hundreds of others unique symbols related to football should have been included instead of fruit, bars and bells!
